In 1965, Mercury Drug opened its 3rd store in Quiapo, which, to this day, operates 24/7. The firm was founded by the late Mariano Que who pioneered services like delivery of drugs and 24/7 pharmacy operations in the Philippines.
Simula ng maitatag ang Mercury Drug, ang pangunahing layunin ni Mr. Que ay maihatid ang gamot sa mga mahihirap na lugar. Que then decided to invest his P100 to buy the drug and sell these in single doses using his wooden pushcart until he successfully opened the first outlet of Mercury Drug in Bambang, Manila on March 1, 1945.
To date, Mercury Drug has over 1,000 branches nationwide.
Ngunit sa kabila nito, Bakit Walang Mercury Sa SM? Ito pala ang dahilan.
At the time Mercury Drug was beginning to expand, the late Henry Sy “the founder of SM Supermalls” was a shoe shine/repair man.
From shoe shine/repair man, nagsumikap si Sy na makaipon ng pera para gawing puhunan sa kanyang planong tindahan ng sapatos.
Bago pa man maitatag ang SM, ang madiskarteng si Sy ay sinubukang kausapin ang Mercury Drug para makapag renta ng maliit na pwesto at makapag benta ng sapatos sa botika, pero sa kasamaang palad, siya ay ni REJECT.
Ngunit gamit ang naipong pera sa shoe/shine repair business niya. Itinatag ni Sy ang Shoemart sa Quiapo noong 1958.
Since then, Sy founded the SM group, which has evolved into a conglomerate spanning retail, banking, hotels and property development. His holdings also included huge shopping centers in China.
There are 72 SM malls nationwide—and counting, without a single Mercury Drug inside the mall. Whatever the reason may be, Mercury Drug still managed to become the leading drugstore in the Philippines.
